Parks Library faculty, staff, and student workers were amazed Friday to discover a real-live, working fax machine in a sparsely used corner of HR. The discovery was a result of a vendor advertisement arriving via fax at 12:15pm.
“I think the last thing we got by fax was 5 years ago? Maybe 10?” said Jayne Lande. “To be honest, I can't remember the last one I sent.”
The fax, short for facsimile, machine has an illustrious history at Iowa State, but most in attendance assumed they had been moved into storage or archives.
“Who sends things by fax anymore?” asked Emma Molls.
“I thought we got rid of these things years ago,” mused Lorrie Pellack.
Ed Goedeken further regaled the crowd with tales of something called the IBM Selectric ball-style typewriter, which he insists was a real thing.
“Oh yes, oh yes, it had a ball and a hammer doohickey and the whole shebang.”
After 25 minutes of wide-eyed amazement, the crowd slowly dispersed, and several people were seen shaking their heads and mumbling they just couldn’t believe it.
As of press time, the joke, "1988 called; it wants its fax machine back" had been heard 11 times.
