Citing recent successes from moving collection development activities to a patron driven acquisition (PDA) model, Iowa State University Library administration recently announced it will extend this program to the HR department.
“Patrons will now be able to request who to hire and at what grade level,” explained Dean Beth McNeil. “We really think this will simplify the thoughtful and deliberate process of hiring we have traditionally done.”
Patrons can use the library website to search for the expert of their choice and select “Add” to consult those external to Iowa State. When a certain level of requests, currently set to 5, is met, the system triggers an automatic offer of employment to be sent to the candidate.
“I think it’s great,” said Amanda Ng, sophomore in Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering. “We get to have input on who the library hires. It shows they really care about students and listen to our concerns.”
Hilary Deike issued a statement expressing strong reservations but ultimately urged staff to trust the students’ decisions. A webinar will be set up to communicate further information about the program.
Though the announcement stressed the new PDA+HR program is only applicable for new hires and vacancies, the possibility of expanding it to include promotion and tenure decisions was not ruled out.
One Regents University, speaking on condition of anonymity, commented, “We are watching closely to see just how big of a mistake this is.”
Current offers to Neil Degrasse Tyson, Bill Nye, and Beyoncé are so far unreturned.
